For enthusiasts of Dutch model railways, there is good news: Roco 7700015, the electric two-car Plan V multiple unit of the Dutch Railways (NS), brings a recognizable piece of railway history back to life. This model is better known as the Mat ’64, or to many simply as the “Apekop” – a train that defined the Dutch railway landscape for decades.
A piece of Dutch railway history
The real Plan V multiple unit entered service in the mid-1960s as a standard stopping train. With 246 units built, it was the most widely produced multiple unit of the NS. The first series appeared in a green livery with sand-yellow stripes, but from 1968, new units were delivered from the factory in yellow. Between 1969 and 1973, earlier units were also repainted into the now-famous yellow NS house style. Until their withdrawal from service, these trains operated on almost all electrified lines in the Netherlands.
A true-to-life model by Roco
The Roco 7700015 is a highly detailed H0 scale (1:87) version of the Plan V, produced for Era IV. The model stands out thanks to its fine detailing and prototypical finish, including:
- Dark grey chassis
- Delicate, realistic pantographs
- Many separately fitted plug-in parts
- Sharp printing in NS yellow
Thanks to these details, the train immediately feels “real” on the layout.

Technology and running characteristics
Technically, the model is equally impressive. The Roco 7700015 is equipped with a 5-pole motor with flywheel, ensuring smooth and quiet running. Two axles are powered, one of which is fitted with traction tyres. The minimum curve radius is 419 mm, making the unit suitable even for more compact layouts.
Lighting & digitalisation
- LED headlights and tail lights (3-light head signal / 2 tail lights, direction-dependent)
- Factory-installed LED interior lighting
- Interior lighting digitally switchable
- Equipped with a PluX22 interface for easy digital upgrade
